28 September, 12.15-13.15 – Respecting the dignity of living beings
Switzerland was the first country to enshrine the protection of the dignity of living beings in its constitution (art. 120 Cst). The term “dignity” is usually associated with humans. It is less often used to refer to animals and rarely to other types of living beings (e.g. plants). In this brown bag lunch, we will discuss how the concept of “dignity of living beings” (Würde der Kreatur) can be understood. We will also consider what it implies practically for researchers doing empirical work with animals.
