We invite applications for a five-day workshop on experimental methods in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics, with a special focus on their application to underdescribed Indigenous languages. This workshop will take place at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in collaboration with the University of Zurich (UZH) & NCCR Evolving Language, and is open to advanced undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students interested in the cognitive science of language, language documentation, and experimental fieldwork. There is an optional follow-up field visit to Chana Research Station.
The workshop will combine morning lectures with hands-on afternoon tutorials and will cover key methods in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics, including:
Introduction to Psycho-/Neurolinguistics With PUCP professors and researchers from the University of Zurich (UZH)
Experimental Methods
Behavioral methods (e.g., reaction time, coordination games, language acquisition)
Eye-tracking
EEG
Special Topics
Research with Amazonian and other underdescribed languages
Designing ethical and context-sensitive experiments
Working with language consultants
The workshop will be bilingual: instruction will be in Spanish or English, depending on the speaker.
Lecturers and contributions
Optional Field Visit
A follow-up trip to the Chana Research Station in the Ucayali region is planned for the week following the workshop. This is a unique opportunity to accompany researchers in applying experimental methods in a field setting. Due to logistical constraints, this trip will be limited to a small number of recent graduates or doctoral students.
Advanced undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students
Students and former research assistants from UNIA (up to 5 slots reserved; see Funding below)
Participants from other regions of Peru and neighboring countries
Priority will be given to students who are:
Motivated to apply experimental methods in their own research
Working with (or planning to work with) underdescribed or Indigenous languages
Interested in collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches
Experienced in using experimental methods for psycholinguistic research
Students who complete the workshop (at least 16 teaching hours) will be eligible to receive 1 academic credit, subject to their university’s credit transfer policies.
Application Process
To apply, please submit the following:
A short CV (max. 2 pages)
A motivation letter (max. 300 words), outlining your research interests and why you want to participate
Selected applicants may be invited for a short interview before final admission to the workshop.
Funding
The workshop is free of charge. PUCP will provide access to seminar rooms and labs. Thanks to support from partnering institutions, we can provide funding for:
Travel and accommodation for up to 5 students from UNIA
Support for selected students from outside Lima or neighboring countries
