Lighthouse Awards: The National Centres of Competence in Research shine beyond science
On the 27th of June, the Swiss National Science Fondation (SNSF) rewarded the work of the NCCR Evolving Language’s in the field of Data Science.
The pilot competition “Lighthouse Awards” opposed the 5th series of National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs), including the NCCR Evolving Language, and recognized their initiatives outside of science. Indeed, NCCRs ought to be innovative and competitive in fields of work around research such as Education and Training, Outreach or Data Science. More information.
A winning open data platform
With their open data management platform, the Data Science office of the NCCR Evolving Language was awarded a prize in the competition. Guanghao You, the officer behind the project explains: “Our researchers are encouraged to share their data and metadata at an early stage of research“. The datas are then stored and can be accessed and reused in publications by other groups. This is part of a FAIR data management approach (FAIR standing for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), which promotes the extension of the life-cycle of data, making research less wastefull and more coherent.
With his team, Guanghao created guidelines for the NCCR’s researchers, using the program OpenBIS from the ETHZ. Thanks to his work, some data sets from NCCR researchers have been downloaded hundreds of times, and hopefully will be used to make new scientific discoveries.
