Within the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Evolving Language, which involves nearly 40 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, and the University of Zurich Technology Platform LiRI (Linguistic Research Infrastructure), we seek to hire a data science consultant specialized in statistical modeling at the University of Zurich. The successful candidate will work intensively with researchers across the entire network of the NCCR and language scientists in Switzerland more broadly. Conditions permitting, this may involve also spending limited periods of time in labs outside Zurich. The position is initially limited for a period of two years with the possibility of extension and a permanent contract. Your responsibilities
The data science consultant will support the different research groups of the NCCR with all types of statistical tasks, ranging from design of experiments and observational studies to development of new statistical methodologies. The successful candidate is expected to actively interact with other data science platforms in Switzerland, e.g. at the ETH Zurich adn the Swiss Data Science Center, as well as with partners in industry (e.g. the Google Research Natural Language Processing Group in Zurich).
Your profile
The ideal candidate has an MSc or PhD degree in statistics or data science and profound domain knowledge in language science, or a degree in language science and strong expertise in data science/statistics, is able to quickly immerse in different interdisciplinary research topics, and is able to efficiently communicate with scientists working on language from a large variety of perspectives and/or on animal communication. The NCCR and LiRI place great emphasis on teamwork and on multidisciplinary perspectives. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential.

The position is initially limited to one year but will be converted into a permanent position after a positive performance assessment. Your responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a data science task force at the NCCR’s headquarters in Zurich in co-affiliation with the University of Zurich’s Technology Platform LiRI (Linguistic Research Infrastructure). The task force will work intensively with researchers across the entire network of the NCCR and so the members of the task force are expected to also spend time in the various labs of the network (conditions permitting). The task force will actively collaborate with data science platforms at the ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne (e.g. the Swiss Data Science Centre) as well as with partners in industry (e.g. the Google Research Natural Language Processing Group in Zurich).Your profile
The ideal candidate has a PhD degree in a relevant discipline such as speech recognition, sound separation, computational neuroscience, neuroinformatics, or natural language processing. S/he is knowledgeable in problem settings in the domains relevant to the NCCR and well versed with machine learning techniques including deep learning and reinforcement learning. S/he is experienced in developing efficient solutions in both small and big data settings.

The Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research “Evolving Language” is part of the Department of Basic Neurosciences. It brings together nearly 40 different research groups from a wide variety of disciplines across Switzerland. Within the framework of this NCCR Evolving Language, we are looking for a :
Scientific Assistant 1 at 60%
whose main mission will be to implement a new doctoral school in Language Sciences, equal opportunity measures at the NCCR level and to set up an equity and professional training strategy.
Your main tasks will include :
Analyze the various disciplines involved in the program, particularly in the field of equal opportunity and education
Liaising with existing doctoral programs to coordinate NCCR knowledge transfer efforts across Switzerland
Organize the annual NCCR summer school: contact researchers according to the disciplines addressed, organize the event
Develop, implement and organize education events
Evaluate the impact of measures in the areas of equity and education and propose additional measures
Job qualifications :
You have a university degree in the disciplines of the NCCR (Language Science, Neuroscience, Biology, Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy)
You have professional experience in academic research as well as in research management and/or in the education sector and/or in the equality sector
You are fluent in English, as well as French and German with at least a passive understanding of the third language
You are comfortable with the daily use of office software and related tools and are able to adapt quickly to software and various operating systems
You have good analytical, synthesis and writing skills
Previous knowledge of the university environment and/or the HUG and public administration would be an asset
Private law contract for a fixed term.
