Our researchers at the Societas Linguistica Europaea Conference 2025
Many of our researchers attended the 58th Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE) from 26-29th of August 2025 hosted at the Université Bordeaux Montaigne in Bordeaux, France, and contributed through workshops, talks and poster sessions.
In a workshop, NCCR Evolving Language director and members Balthasar Bickel, Catalina Torres, Stefan Schnell and Frank Seifart talked about “Taking Time Seriously: The temporal dynamics of language”. Paul Widmer and John Mansfield also hosted a workshop on “Disentangling Contact and Inheritance in Lexical Semantics”.
Jacob Ayers, Alexandra Bosshard, Maёl Leroux, Remo Nitschke and Simon Townsend put together with fellow researchers affiliated with the NCCR Evolving Language a workshop titled “From Linguistics to Animal Communication and Back” that brought attention to research in animal communication to the more classical linguistics community. For the researchers, the willingness of the classical linguistics community to accept a workshop on animal communication, and Alexandra Bosshard’s talk on compositionality in marmoset communication winning the best PostDoc talk across the entire conference, given some historically tumultuous relations, represents a significant milestone for the field of animal communication.
