  • We are looking for someone to reinforce our research team on the evolutionary origins of human cognition. The research project is to investigate how wild chimpanzees use communication as a potential ‘teaching’ tool, using both behavioural observations and field experiments (

    We aim to shortlist applicants with an MSc degree, a relevant training background (biology, psychology, anthropology or similar), strong interest in animal cognition and advanced scientific writing and data analysis skills. Of additional relevance are field experience and strong reference letters.

    The successful candidate is expected to work full-time on research, with only modest teaching and administrative obligations. The project will require 18-24 months of fieldwork, split into 2-3 periods. The position is fully funded for a maximum of 4 years, with a budget for travel expenses.

    The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers working on the origins and future of language ( The project will be co-supervised by Klaus Zuberbühler (Univ of Neuchatel) and Josep Call (Univ of St Andrews), based at the University of Neuchatel with the possibility of establishing a cotutelle with the University of St Andrews.
